Broken Water Main Closes Streets in Downtown Danville

By Bay City News, Inc. --

Downtown streets in Danville remain closed this morning as a result of a water main break and flooding on Thursday evening. At about 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Danville police were dispatched to the intersection of Hartz Avenue and Diablo Road for a report of a water main break.

Police closed the intersection immediately as water flowed from the broken East Bay Municipal Utility District water main into the streets. Police closed Hartz Avenue from Railroad Avenue to Diablo Road, and Diablo Road from Front Street to Hartz Avenue.

Side streets in the area, including Rose Street and Linda Mesa are closed to through traffic. As of 12:30 a.m. water coming from the broken main has stopped flowing and surface water on the streets around the break have begun to subside.

Road closures will stay in effect until city maintenance staff has cleared all debris from the roadway. Motorists are encouraged to avoid Diablo Road in the downtown area. Motorists heading to Danville from Interstate Highway 680 should use the Sycamore Valley Road or El Cerro Boulevard exits.
