Fair officials say 54,000 people from around the East Bay flooded the Alameda County Fair last night to watch the first 'Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular' in 16 years.

It was the first time since 1997 that the fireworks were held on Independence Day.

On July 4, 1998, a gang-related shooting occurred on the carnival midway, injuring 10 fairgoers and prompting the suspension of the fireworks show on fourth of July until this year.

Pleasanton Police issued a traffic advisory on July 4, and for several weeks ahead of time, warning of potential gridlock and heavy traffic as a result of the fair's patriotic pyrotechnics.

Nearby in Dublin, hundreds of residents bought 'Safe and Sane' fireworks at one of the many fireworks booths around town and later celebrated at one of the designated parks in Dublin

The fair runs through July 6.

Illegal Fireworks in Newark last night was EPIC, I didn't have any this year, but I did end up making a Bottle Bomb and dropping it into a nearby Gutter, for that extra Boom and Rumble! Cut up the Piccolo Pete's, I obtained from NUSD's Legal Fireworks Stand, and dropped about half a pound of Powder into a Listerine Bottle, poked a hole in the top of the cap and dropped a Fuse. Crude, but effective.

Autumn, perhaps you can find out why so many people keep "passing out" at the Carnival there. Every damn day, there's over a dozen people "Passed out", some near the blue gate, others the green gate, some by the Ferris wheel, others by the corn dog stand. Listening to ALCO's County Wide is like a who dunnit mystery LOL! At first, I thought it was ETOH Subjects, but all ages, backgrounds etc. The youngest was 6, I believe.

@James: I am guessing there is always a steady flow of those but I know the firefighters were dealing with a lot of folks who were dehydrated and suffering from being out in the extreme heat.
