Obie the (Once) Obese Dachshund is Coming to Bay Area

A dachshund that once weighed 77 pounds has become an international star in the fight to raise awareness about the dangers of pet obesity.

A once very big little dog who has captured hearts worldwide with his big brown eyes is making the Bay Area his final stop on a tour across the United States.

Obie, a dachshund that topped the scale at 77 pounds — three times his normal weight, was rescued in 2012 by a Portland vet technician. She helped him slim down to 29 pounds and is now telling his story to help publicize animal obesity and raise awareness about spaying and neutering.

The 7-year-old dog has attracted quite the following, with 144,000 Facebook page likes and a portfolio of national media stories.

Right now his team is looking for a place in Concord to park their RV around Nov. 27. (Click here to give them some suggestions on where to stay!)

Getting fit wasn't an easy journey. Obie suffered from skin infections and had to have reconstruction surgery, a testament to how dangerous pet overfeeding can be.

Visit Obie's website for more information on how he got healthy and when you can meet him on his trip to California.
