Alamo Girl Needs Donations to Save Miniature Donkey

Casey Garrigan, 14, is reaching out to the community and asking for help to save Abby, her donkey.

To make a donation to help save Casey's miniature donkey, go here. You can also buy See's Candy on the website, with all the profits going to Abby's surgery.

-----

After Casey Garrigan's parents paid $2,500 in veterinary bills to help save the life of their daughter's miniature donkey earlier this month, the Garrigan's planned on bringing the donkey home and hoping for the best.

Before the family left the UC Davis Veterinary Hospital, Casey, a Monte Vista High freshman, looked at the discharge report. It said "that the owner refused treatment."

"I did not refuse treatment," Casey scolded the veterinarian.

The veterinarian explained that her miniature donkey, Abby, needed a pacemaker (which costs $2,300) to ensure she would live a long life and her parents chose not to get it.

Casey wasn't pleased. The 14-year-old was going to do everything humanly possibly to save her donkey. She took action, and now asks for your help.

Last weekend, Abby created a website to help bring in donations. Along with asking for donations, she's selling See's Candy with all the profits going to help pay for Abby's pacemaker.

In just a few days, Abby has already raised $840. Casey needs to raise $2,300 by the first week of December to keep Abby alive.

To understand why saving Abby is so important for Casey, you first have to understand Casey's love of animals — all animals.

Along with two miniature donkeys, Casey has bunnies, chickens, two dogs and a cat.

Two years ago, Casey had a horse and wanted another, but her parents drew a line in the sand and said no. So Casey looked into miniature donkeys, and after searching Craigslist she discovered a donkey farm in Pleasant Hill.

She saved her money, went to the farm, and got a donkey. It cost $350, but the farm owner said that donkeys don't do well on their own. They behave better in pairs. So Casey's parents helped out and paid for a second miniature donkey.

Abby and Ashley (Abby's "sister") officially became part of the Garrigan family and became inseparable.

"If I take one out of the pen, the other one goes crazy and brays nonstop," Casey said. "But that is what I love about them. I love how they are such unique animals, with their own special personality. They are just like dogs."

Ashley has always been the more active of the two, and Casey has trained her to compete in regional and national skill shows.

Unlike Ashley, Abby has never been energetic, so Casey would enter her in costume shows.

"She is completely different from Ashley," Casey said. "Abby loves to cuddle and will walk right up to you and put her head in your lap. She has always been more relaxed so she is like my little puppy that will follow you everywhere but wouldn't hurt a thing."

Why Abby lacked Ashley's energy became more clear on Nov. 1.

After Casey had walked her two donkeys around her Alamo neighborhood, Abby collapsed in her pen. She was rushed to the After Hours Emergency Equine Vet. At first, they thought Abby had West Nile Virus, but after taking Abby to UC Davis it was determined that Abby was born with a defective heart.

So Abby needs the pacemaker, and Casey's mother is convinced her daughter will raise the money needed.

"I know she is going to reach her goal," Kathy Garrigan said. "We are so proud of her for all she has done to help Abby. She is such an animal lover and takes really good care of her pets."

Thank you!! You GET it! Casey is not asking for donations! She is selling See's Candy...It is a fundraiser. That's all...most of these people are making me so upset!!!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:27 am
I doubt you are a teen...you sound like a little old grouch!!! (what teen says "for crying out loud"?)...You are CLUELESS!! It definitely wasn't the only news this week...you probably would have rather read about a car accident that killed 4 people...or gang shooting that took the life of a teen. SORRY...this was just a "feel good" story about a girl who worked HARD by selling See's Candy to earn money to have a very specialized procedure done at Davis. It was meant as a heart warming event in our community. But I guess "teens" like YOU are looking for real news, right?
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:28 am
Maybe it is YOUR parents who should be ashamed! Leave my daughter out of your troubles!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:31 am
I guess you didn't read the story. Casey (not Cassey) is NOT coming to your community for money to save her pet. REALLY? Is that what you think? Casey is doing a fundraiser. This is what kids who aren't old enough to WORK do to earn money. She doesn't want your money. She wanted to sell See's Candy to EARN money. You just don't get it!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:40 am
Alex Tsurada or whoever you are...what a jerk! You have NO idea what the value of our house is...Nor does it matter!! Maybe YOUR son with the little teddy bear didn't work for HIS iphone...Maybe YOUR San Ramon student doesn't know HOW to make a website...but YOU obviously do not know Casey and neither does your spawn! She used her own money to buy Abby a few years ago, and after we paid over $2000 to diagnose the reason she was collapsing, Casey decided to EARN the money to pay for the pacemaker herself. She is not the child you describe...maybe that is YOUR child NOT Casey! Casey is doing a good job of working hard to run a successful fundraiser by selling candy. Why don't you get your facts together before you start spewing?!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:44 am
It was not a cruel decision on our part. We just paid thousands of dollars to diagnose why Abby was collapsing. We simply said we would have to wait for a wile before we couold afford any more vet bills. It is really very simple...Casey did not want to wait. Casey wanted Abby to get the pacemaker as soon as possible so CASEY decided to EARN the money by selling candy. She didn't sit out in front of Safeway and ask for money. She went around the neighborhood and sold See's Candy. She designed the website...ALL BY HERSELF...to help her sell ore candy. There is nothing cruel about this story it is a beautiful story and thankfully has a beautiful ending...Abby is schuled for the procedure at Davis.
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:46 am
I don't know you...but I LOVE you!!!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:48 am
Casey is actually fundraising for the money to pay for the procedure. She DID however receive an extremely GENEROUS donation on Friday and now has enough money for the pacemaker. The surgery has been scheduled. Abby will be fine!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:52 am
Are you REALLY the mother or a 14 year old? I have a hard time believing that...Casey is NOT asking for your money. Is that REALLY what you think? Do you really think she should give up Christmas and birthday presents for a few years?? Casey is WORKING by selling See's Candy and is EARNING the money to pay for something SHE wants to do. The "community" has NOTHING to do with it...unless they want to buy candy. Read the story again!!!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 02:58 am
Thank you Dorothea! This has TRULY gotten out of hand. Casey is a great kid. She is a hard worker. My husband and I both work full time, our house is not paid for...n or is it worth $1.5mm. We are animal lovers...we take VERY good care of our pets and I think we are terrific parents. Our kids have grown up in a very affluent area but they are very grounded and know the value of money. I think most of these comments are from people who have either raised rotten children or just people who didn't actually read the story. Oh well...it was meant to make the community proud...it turned out to be a bullseye on our family....

ALEX TSURADA IS A LOSER!!!!!!!!!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 03:01 am
Shut up...I'm sure you've NEVER donated to ANYTHING...especially World Hunger!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 03:03 am
Thanks David! Unfortunately Alex doesn't really understand that this is a story about a local girl who thought of an innovative way to get exposure on her fundraiser to help pay fer a pacemaker for her donkey...That's all!
Casey's Mom November 19, 2012 at 03:05 am
Thanks for your "tip" We will ALL try to remember that!
Carolyn Phinney November 19, 2012 at 04:50 am
Casey's Mom,
Just ignore them. Don't let the naysayers drag you down to their level. Not worth it.
Carolyn Phinney November 19, 2012 at 04:54 am
Casey's Mom,
Selling Sees Candy is a standard school fund-raiser. I think when you ask for donations, that is a fund-raiser. Who cares if it is a fund-raiser? This entire debate is absurd. Neither Casey, nor her parents, have done anything wrong. Casey is learning to take care of her own pet. That's the take away. If you like candy, you can buy a box from her instead of someone else.
Carolyn Phinney November 19, 2012 at 04:57 am
Thank you, Casey's Mom. Google me!
I'm a mom too. I used to tell my children, "First take responsibility, then you get freedom." I like that Casey is trying to take responsibility to earn money for her pet. This is a good lesson for parents to teach a child. The rest of this is nonsense.
Carolyn Phinney November 19, 2012 at 04:59 am
ha ha ha ha...I had the same reaction as Casey's mom....NOT! Nice try Alex.
Carolyn Phinney November 19, 2012 at 05:01 am
Shocked teen101, What you should have said is the following, "If you have ever spent money on anything other than survival, don't ever complain about the price of gas or anything again."
Yeah, right.
Carol Huff November 19, 2012 at 10:42 am
Alex, why are you so bitter? This girl is not sitting on her a**. Whether she lives in a 1.5 million dollar home or a mobile home is totally irrelevant and has nothing to do with the fact that she is willing to raise money in whatever way she so chooses to help her donkey, which is not a little pony. Get your facts straight. Leave this child alone and get off this page if you can't say something positive. If you don't like what she's doing, take your negative comments elsewhere.
Carol Huff November 19, 2012 at 10:46 am
Concerned Citizen...you go ahead and donate your money to the children who won't have a Christmas. That's your choice. Their parents can do the same thing Casey is doing to raise money for their cause. But don't condemn this child for loving her donkey. If you can't say something positive, please don't say anything at all. This child's parents' worth is none of my business. What is my business is that she is willing to do what it takes to get her animal better.
Carol Huff November 19, 2012 at 10:51 am
J.C., you are welcome to set up the same kind of site that Casey did. What's important to one person may not be important to another. While I can empathize with your plight and the plights of the thousands of hungry and homeless, at the same time I can also see where Casey is doing what she can to save something that is important to her. We should all be more diligent in seeking ways to solve our problems, just as Casey is doing here. If you can't donate, that's fine. Doesn't mean others can't and won't.
Carol Huff November 19, 2012 at 10:53 am
Where they live is irrelevant to this story. It's not about the parents. It's about a 14-year-old child named Casey who has a sick donkey that she loves very much. She is trying to raise the money for treatment. It's her responsibility because it's her donkey. Her parents have nothing to do with this. When you were a child, didn't you have things that were your responsibility to take care of? That's how we learn. If Casey had everything handed to her on a silver platter, she would never learn the value of a dollar. Get a life, Alamo Resident.
Carol Huff November 19, 2012 at 10:57 am
Alex Turd, be ashamed of yourself. This story is about a 14-year-old child named Casey who has a sick donkey that she loves very much. Whether she created the website herself is totally irrelevant. It has nothing to do with this girl's eagerness to help something she loves. Obviously you have never loved anything this much.
Rhonda Stock November 19, 2012 at 11:34 am
Your comment just about made me shout with joy, Casey's Mom! I am so happy that Abby is scheduled for her surgery. You are right, it is a beautiful story, and I hope that you don't let all these horrible people on here get you down. You should be very proud of your daughter and what she has done! She truly knows the value of a life and will grow up to be a wonderful, caring person. The world needs more people like her.
Rhonda Stock November 19, 2012 at 11:38 am
I just can't believe how stupid some people can be. This story SHOULD make the community proud! This little girl was able to fundraise enough money to save her donkey's life. She is an example of someone who takes responsability for the animals that she cares for, and the community should be proud that there are people with that kind of character there. These idiots who hide behind their keyboards and do nothing but complain should be ashamed of themselves.
Rhonda Stock November 19, 2012 at 11:40 am
I know, so did I. LOL. Someone that bitter, angry and stupid has probably never donated a dollar in their life to anything but themselves. Alex Tsurada - your other posts have shown you a heartless, uncaring, bitter jerk, so don't try to suddenly make people come over to your side by claiming to actually care about something.
Rhonda Stock November 19, 2012 at 11:42 am
I sincerely doubt you have ever given to anything other than yourself, Alex Tsurada. Nice try, but no one here believes you after the verbal vomit you spewed earlier.
Rhonda Stock November 19, 2012 at 11:49 am
Give me a break! Have you ever bought a coffee in the morning? Oh, better not complain about the price of gas because that's not a necessity. What about more than one pair of pants or an extra pair of shoes? Don't you dare complain about the price of gas or anything else. Did you buy anyone Christmas presents? Well, that's wasted money because it's not a survival necessity, so don't you dare complain about the cost of living. *dripping with sarcasm* I think all you people who obviously don't care about the things that are really important in life (like love, caring for the things that are under your protection, animal welfare, kids taking responsability to actually care about something important, etc.) should just go away. This is a beautiful story about a girl who really CARES about something, and I think she and her family should be commended for the wonderful job they have done. I sincerely hope that Casey's mom has been able to keep all of this negativity away from Casey because Casey should be incredibly proud of what she has achieved.
