Emken has created a website asserting that voters want a new senator because they believe the current incumbent has failed. "Now, more than ever, America needs a new direction in Washington," Emken, 48, says on her website. The Oakland Tribune reports Emken also has formed a campaign committee and hired campaign staffers. Her campaign consultant Tim Clark told the Sacramento Bee that "she's definitely in." Emken finished fourth out of four in the 2010 GOP primary for the House seat held by incumbent Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton. Emken said she left corporate America …

VFW Plans To Dissolve Its Political Action Committee

Danville campaign event was among the incidents that caused VFW leaders to take action.

Due in part to an incident in Danville, the Veterans of Foreign Wars national office has taken action to dissolve its political action committee. The local event happened on Oct. 13 when a representative of the VFW's political action committee presented Democratic congressman Jerry McNerney with a campaign donation and announced the group's endorsement of the two-term incumbent. Among other things, McNerney was lauded for securing federal funds to build a new veterans hall in Danville. The incident angered some local veterans, including VFW member Jack Freethy of Lafayette. He fired off a letter to the VFW headquarters in Kansas City. In it, Freethy said he felt the endorsement went "beyond the responsibility and charge of the VFW." He …

Harmer May Seek Recount

Republican congressional challenger asks supporters to contribute to recount fund in his close battle with Rep. Jerry McNerney.

Harmer wrote an e-mail from Washington, D.C., where he is attending a Republican orientation for new congressional members. Harmer says he still hopes to become a member of the House. He notes California did not elect any new GOP congressional members on Nov. 2. "The wave that swept the rest of the nation, resulting in well over 60 net new Republican seats, seems to have washed up against the eastern flank of the Sierra," Harmer wrote. Harmer, a San Ramon attorney, says the 11th Congressional District is "still in play." He asks people to donate money to a recount …

Rep. Jerry McNerney called his 1,685 vote lead against Republican challenger David Harmer "insurmountable" during a press conference in Dublin on Thursday afternoon.  At the conference, jubilant supporters joined McNerney as he once again announced he has won a third term in the 11th Congressional District.  "The votes are in, the results are clear," he said. "Voters in this district have chosen me to be the congressman for the next session." The news briefing occurred despite the fact McNerney's Republican opponent, David Harmer, has not conceded. At midday Thursday, the Secretary of State's website has the Democratic congressman ahead by 1,685 votes. But, there are more than 100,000 mail-in and provisional ballots to be counted in the …
