Yikes! Another Quake Hits East Bay Tonight

The East Bay gets jolted by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake near Berkeley at 8:16 p.m., hours after a 4.0 quake hit the region

Another earthquake rattled the East Bay tonight.

The 3.8 quake hit at 8:16 p.m. and was centered 1 mile east of Berkeley.

"It felt like a giant picked up our apartment building and threw it down," said Katherine Erickson, an Oakland resident who lives near the epicenter.

This evening's quake follows a 4.0 magnitude earthquake that shook the East Bay this afternoon.

That quake hit at 2:41 p.m. It was centered 2 miles southeast of Berkeley, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

An aftershock in the same epicenter was reported at 4:50 p.m. It measured 2.2.

The first quake was felt in Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, Union City, Newark, San Leandro, Lafayette and the San Ramon Valley, among other places.

There were no reports of serious damage or injury. However, BART delayed trains up to 15 minutes systemwide this afternoon to conduct safety checks. They said they will be similar delays tonight.

Berkeley police said they have not received any reports of damage or injuries but have gotten some calls about car and building alarms that were activated by the quake.

Keith Knudsen, deputy director of the USGS Earthquake Science Center in Menlo Park, said today's temblor was a standard Hayward Fault Line quake.

He said the temblor was of the typical "strike-slip" variety, in which two sides of the fault slide horizontally.

Knudsen said the USGS had not yet recorded any aftershocks and that there is a roughly 5 percent chance that this afternoon's quake could be a foreshock to a larger seismic event.

Mother Nature certainly has good timing. Today many around the Bay joined an estimated 8 million Californians who participated in quake preparedness drills.

Students and faculty at the University of California at Berkeley also participated in the drill called ShakeOut, sounding a siren across campus this morning, school spokeswoman Janet Gilmore said.

Strange, I have always felt previous earthquakes, but I haven't felt any of the last three earthquakes reported.

OH wow, James, good memory! We all forgot about Camping when his first prediction didn't come true ... and wasn't there an earthquake in Iceland that last time? Maybe he's just really good at predicting quakes.

I think it was the California Earthquake Authority's doing. They had their Great Shakeout at 10:20 am. The temblor was just a few hours late -- a fair margin of error in the scheme of geologic time.

So what exactly does an earthquake kit include? And where might I find one?
Cool profile picture.

An Earthquake Kit usually contains necessities such as sealed non-perishable foods, a flashlight with extra batteries, a Radio if you are so inclined, possibly blankets and clean water and/or a filter, as well as an extra supply of any medications you may need. This is simply a rough list from what I remember from emergency drills that the high school makes us take, but you can most likely find a more detailed list online or call up the fire department.

The city has a great link of information for earthquake preparedness.

Looks like we just had another from the same spot. Initial report is 3.9. I did not feel the earlier on since I was at work in Milpitas, but I sure felt this one.

We felt the 8:20 pm one here in Pleasanton near Valley Care. It was a little stronger and lasted a couple seconds longer than the ones this afternoon, but not seeing anything on the USGS site yet.

Yikes is right! This evening's quake shook us pretty hard in my Walnut Creek home! The one this afternoon just gently rocked my car back and forth while I was loading groceries.

People get ready, the Bay Area is getting warning signals from Mother Nature, be thankful she is sending out warning signals. It's coming, that is a fact.

I only felt a minor shudder and creaking sound, no pics or objects moved or swayed, my dogs barely noticed. I am above 580 right on the Hayward fault in north east San Leandro/Lake Chabot area.

Definitely felt it - in Rockridge. Felt the one earlier today, too, but this one seemed longer. Being a Kansas girl, it freaked me out a little I have to say.

There were two jolts! I wonder which one was the bigger jolt between the earthquake and the news that New haven is coming back with a parcel tax
