Vawter's Preliminary Hearing Set for Thursday
Michael Vawter, the former Cub Scout leader from Danville charged with downloading child porn, is due in court again.
A former Cub Scout leader who police say downloaded child pornography onto his laptop will appear before a judge Thursday morning for his preliminary hearing.
Michael Vawter, 40, was arrested in March and pleaded guilty earlier this summer to one felony count of possession of child pornography. His private attorney asked to delay the preliminary hearing to this week so he has more time to review the case.
Prosecutors will present all the facts of the case before a judge, who will decide if there's enough evidence to take it to trial.
Vawter, who worked in San Ramon as an insurance broker until his arrest, posted his $20,000 bail the day of his arrest and remains free. He lives in Danville and his membership with the Boy Scouts of America was revoked days after his arrest.
Police say Vawter used Limewire–a peer-to-peer file-sharing software– to download nearly 200 videos, at least one of a masked man having sex with a preteen girl.
Vawter's hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Walnut Creek Superior Court.
