UPDATE: Witness Heard Twin Infants Crying Inside SUV, Called Police While Mom Shopped

Amanda Nejat of Danville was arrested Wednesday after leaving her 11-week-old twins in her Escalade while she shopped inside Stoneridge Mall.

A mall shopper heard the cries of twin infants coming from inside a Cadillac Escalade on Wednesday afternoon, and when she saw there was no adult with them, she called police.

Stoneridge Mall security detained Amanda Nejat, 46, at her SUV until the police could get there, said Officer Larry Cox of the Pleasanton Police Department

The Danville woman had allegedly been inside the mall for 40 minutes, and told police initially that she just went in to use the bathroom. Later, police say she admitted that she did some shopping and even returned some things.

Nejat was arrested around 6:15 p.m. on suspicion of felony child endangerment, and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case today, Friday, to decide how to charge her.

Cox said that a woman walked by the SUV in the Stoneridge parking lot and heard infant cries. She looked through the tinted windows and saw two car seats with 11-week-old twins inside, both crying.

"She kind of did a double take when she first heard this," he said, noting that the passerby is a mom herself.

"As a parent, you know the difference between an infant cry and the cry of an older child."

Cox said the passerby saw that there was no adult inside, so she called Pleasanton police, then mall security.

As mall security officers and the witness waited by the car, Nejat came out, Cox said.

"They told her they'd called police, and that she needed to wait there," Cox said. "She didn't try to flee or anything like that."

Initially she said she just stopped for a minute to find a restroom, but then changed her story. Cox said police know for sure she was inside for 40 minutes because of security camera footage.

She admitted to shopping and returning some things, Cox said. She didn't say what she was shopping for.

She was arrested on the spot. Her husband picked up the babies and took them home, Cox said.

Patch will update this story as new information comes out.

While I think this is a terrible event and unacceptable, the titles of these articles are extremely over-biased and degrading.

That is an uneducated comment Patrick the facts are the facts that mother was only thinking of herself you never ever not even to run into the bathroom leave your children in the car especially this day and age she should know better. They are 11 weeks! My heart breaks for those lil babies that solely rely on adults to protect and take care of them

Over biased and degrading??? What are you even talking about, how is that relevant to anything? The stupid worthless mother left two children in the car to go SHOPPING! I get it, you must be her husband trying to defend her reputation. Whoever the father is, I hope he's taking better care if those children than she is!

This lady is gross and negligent and should be kept away from the babies. What kind of a sick person leaves 11 week old twin babies in a car at a MALL to go shopping!!? Thank god for the concerned passer by who called Police. This mom deserves maximum punishment - there is NO - NONE - ZERO excuse for leaving NEW BORN babies or kids of any age in a car for almost an HOUR, no less, at a MALL.

Okay, I will be honest, I saw another report saying the kids were 7 years old, which is still disturbing, but much better than 11 month olds, therefore I said what I said.

It's unfortunate this woman has had a chance to breed. The only chance those kids have is dependent on whether or not their father is close to being a decent human being.

Mercury news article says bail was posted and charges have yet to be filed. What are they waiting for? Let her go home and be with the babies?!? Where are the firewalls to make sure these NEW BORN babies are protected now that she is out of jail???

I'm do thankful the woman that heard them took the time to take a peek inside and notice the babies. This is so very sad. Why have babies or children if shopping at a mall is a bigger priority than taking care of them?

"mind your own business"...!!! Are you kidding ? I would report anything like this. Angels were watching over these babies. Thank God she was caught BEFORE harm came to them and not after.

Steve...if you at all mean what you said, you're an idiot. I'm not saying throw the book at her or that she should not be allowed to breed, but to turn your back on the incident and say "no harm, no foul" is incredibly stupid and ignorant. If these kids had suffocated to death in the car on a hot day, would you still say "mind your own business". How many kids have to die in the back seat of a car before you care?

As a parent of three kids, there were countless times over the years where we had to take all three kids out of the car and into a store. At times this was very inconvenient and slowed us down when running around town or shopping, but being a parent comes with the ultimate responsibility of taking care of children who cannot take care of themselves. As a parent, you are entrusted with a young person's life on a day-to-day basis.

The mom exercised extremely poor judgement was very selfish with her actions. We can only trust that she has learned her lesson after this case makes its way through the court system.

If she is the mom and they are 11 week old twins- not 11 months old- there could be many psychological issues at play here as well- sleep deprivation, post-partym depression- not to say this is ok, but perhaps there are circumstances we are not aware of

My first thought was that this woman needs help. Thank God those babies are ok. I hope those around this family take the time to get her good psychological help before something else occurs. She is obviously in some altered state. No mother who is of sane mind leaves a newborn (or 2!) in a car!

I am sure that you "L" have never made any mistakes in your life. Easy to cast a stone.. "Not fit to have kids"?? Really? What a terrible thing to say about someone. And, the fact that you threw in her age and her financial profile just shows us how bitter you are. Get a life.

Often times when someone does something like they aren't caught the first or second or third time. She may have done this before, just not been caught. I just am really thankful that this other woman paid attention as she did and wasn't afraid to get involved. Even if this was the first time the lady left the kids, it would likely not have been the last had she not been busted.

Leaving tiny babies alone for any amount of time is just wrong. She was rightfully arrested and will face the consequences... She and her husband were also involved (indirectly) in the December SWAT Team raid on a home near Blackhawk. They are the landlords who rented the home to a marijuana dispensary owner. Two major events in two months...not a good record in my book.

There is so much judgement on this string of comments. As a mom of 12 month old twins, I know that the first 4 months are extremely difficult. Between sleep deprivation, isolation, and exhaustion...its hard to care for one newborn baby, let alone two. The people on this chain should show some compassion and humanity. Not everthing is black and white. You dont know this mother and what her story is... Yes, she messed up. Leaving the babies in the car unsupervised was a bad decision. Raking this new mom over the coals is pathetic. Grow a heart, have some compassion, and for the love of god...stop judging people you don't even know.

Are you kidding me? Ally, have you left you infants unattended in a vehicle in a srange parking lot while you went shopping? Amanda should have been arrested and I know her.No one has an acceptable reason for such a horrific event. I am glad that the outcome was not worst thanks to the passerby. Those babies could have easily died.

I second Nicole and Ally's comments, as being a mother of three sleep deprivation, isolation and exhaustion could be factors. We live in a "DIY" society, where it is rare to find friends and family who have the time to help or support mothers, because they are too busy with their own lives or don't have the capacity to take care of young children. A sociologist once coined this new generation of parents as "generation squeeze", where folks who have children nowadays are faced with more responsibilities and expenses in comparison to previous generations in childcare, housing, and elder care (i.e. taking care of your parents). With this in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if more of these type of incidences pop up.

There is no excuse for her actions, (it makes me sick to my stomach!) but I truly believe she was not in her right state of mind. This woman delivered a set of twins about two years ago and both died in her arms less than an hour after they were born. I believe there are many factors at play here and until the entire truth comes out, maybe we should all just say a prayer for this babies and a prayer for her well being. Again, no excuse for what she did, but losing two babies can do something to your mental state. Thank you Melissa, Nicole and Ally! I am also a mother of twins and there were days I have no idea how I got thru them. I could barley even see straight.
Again, many factors at play here. Let's just keep all of them in our prayers.

Am I the only one who has noticed that all the people here defending her all just joined Patch in the last day or two? Super shady and so transparent. For a second I thought 1/2 the citizens in this area had lost their minds, but obviously these commenters either know her or they ARE her. Sorry creeps, you're not going to convince the sane people in this community that this was an OK thing to do.

It doesn't matter if this woman has psychological problems (obviously) or is simply selfish and superficial, there is no excuse for leaving 2 helpless infants unattended in a parking lot!!! Really, the landlord of the home on Victoria place with the swat/marajuana incident...who gives a crap??? Those babies could have been stolen or have died. Throw the book at her!,,

Dear Amanda,
My heart sank when I heard this story on the local news. Even though we only met about a year ago, you found a reason confide in me. We have had countless conversations on love, life and motherhood. I know how much it meant for you to become a Mom. A Mom is a loving full time commitment. I don't understand how shopping for something could even compare with the safety of your babies. There is no answer. You were blesssed that an angel passed by and saved them from any possible harm. I hope that this "wake up" call gets you the help that you need and get your life priorites in check. God bless.
