Update: SRVHS Alum Gets Double-Lung Transplant
Katie Fleming, a SRVHS alum who has cystic fibrosis, received a double-lung transplant at Stanford University Medical Center Friday.
Late Thursday night, Katie Fleming finally got the call she and her family have been waiting for—a double-lung donor was available at Stanford University Medical Center.
Fleming had double-lung transplant surgery Friday morning. By Sunday, her aunt, Marylou Ritter, said Fleming was already sitting up on her own.
You can follow Katie's recovery journey on her Web site.
The 20-year-old 2008 graduate of San Ramon Valley High School was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis—an inherited disease that causes the body to produce sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and inhibits the breakdown and absorption of food—at age one.
After a three-week stay in the ICU in April, Fleming moved to the top of the lung-transplant list at Stanford, taking oxygen 24 hours a day from a breathing tube, as she awaited the call about the double-lung donor.
Now that Fleming has received the transplant, family and friends continue to raise the $40,000 needed for her post-transplant care not covered by insurance. There will be a "Walk for Kaitlin" Sunday and there are boxes around town where you can leave "Coins for Kaitlin."
So far, $13,000 has been raised.
The Walk for Kaitlin is Sunday, May 23 at 11 a.m. at Sycamore Clubhouse, 635 Old Orchard Drive in Danville. Online registration is $25, day-of registration is $35. You may also register in person at Primo's on Hartz Avenue. Check back for more details about a golf tournament at the Blackhawk Country Club on August 17.
