Update: El Balazo in Danville to Reopen "Soon"

Restaurant owner won't say exactly when the popular taqueria will open again.

The doors to the El Balazo restaurant in Danville apparently won't be closed for much longer.

Marino Sandoval, the co-owner of the chain, told Patch.com in a phone interview he would reopen the restaurant on San Ramon Valley Boulevard "pretty soon."

Sandoval would not give a time estimate. He also would not comment on why the eatery closed  or what financial issues it faces.

The Danville restaurant was one of five El Balazo locations closed down in the Bay Area on March 10.  The others were in Concord, San Ramon, Lafayette and Pleasanton. The only El Balazo left open was the original location on Haight Street in San Francisco.

This past week, the restaurants in Concord and Pleasanton opened again.

Employees told The Contra Costa Times tax issues led to the closing. The Times reported a lien was placed on El Balazo in November in Alameda County by the state Board of Equalization. That agency collects sales and use taxes in addition to alcohol and tobacco taxes and fees.

The Times also reported court records in Contra Costa County show a November 2008 civil judgment of $49,888 in favor of The Diamond Meat Company against El Balazo.
