Students Shine in Earth Day High School Poster Contest

San Ramon Valley High School students participated in an Earth Day poster contest, one of several efforts students are making to communicate environmental messages to the community.

Students at San Ramon Valley High are doing their part to make Danville more sustainable.

This week, student posters were judged by Sustainable Danville Area for the Earth Day Poster Contest at San Ramon Valley High School

For the contest, students artistically communicated how residents and businesses can make simple choices to help protect natural resources. Judges said the winning posters in the contest were creative in their messaging and use of media.

Cindy Egan, a San Ramon Valley High teacher who leads the school's Environmental/Engineering (E2) program, encouraged students to participate in this first annual poster contest. The contest is one of many programs Egan has worked on with students in the last year to encourage sustainable practices.

Egan has partnered with Sustainable Danville Area in the past year to facilitate water conservation campaigns, bike-to-school events and other student-driven initiatives that promote environmental responsibility.

Through various fund-raising efforts, Egan's E2 students have established a scholarship this year and reached out to the Sustainable Danville group to match the funds.

The group's co-founders are thrilled to help fund this annual award for one student who demonstrates their commitment to the environment through action within our community, or globally.

All seniors at San Ramon Valley High with a GPA of 3.0 or more who are planning to attend a two- or four-year trade school/college or university are eligible to apply. For more information, students should visit the San Ramon Valley High Career Center.

Winner of the Poster contest are:

1st place: Kim Castillo (No Creature Deserves to Live in a Dump)

2nd place: Nicole Lung (You Can Win Riding a Bike)

3rd place: Vamara Batoog (Ice Cream Cone Globe)

All poster contest entries are currently displayed at the Danville Public Library
