Sprouts & Shutters: Dueling Pianos, Kid's Consignment Shop and More

Here's the latest roundup of new businesses in the Tri-Valley area.

 

Wondering what's moving into your neighborhood shopping center? Our biweekly Sprouts & Shutters column highlights the latest Tri-Valley retail and restaurant news.

Enjoy a dinner out while helping a great cause during the "Dine Out for Meals on Wheels" on Nov. 9. Several Tri-Valley restaurants are participating in the fund-raiser include Amici's East Coast Pizzeria in Dublin and Danville, Maggieray's BBQ and The Peasant's Courtyard in Alamo, Piatti in Danville and Katy's Korner in San Ramon. These restaurants will all donate 10 percent of your bill to Meals on Wheels, which provides meals for homebound seniors. Get the complete list of participating restaurants at www.dineoutnow.org.

Brookstone Holiday Shop opened in Danville's Blackhawk Plaza before Halloween, luring in early holiday shoppers. Store employees said hot holiday items this year include the Silver Bullet Mini RC Helicopter, digital photo frames, outdoor wireless speakers and the super-soft n.a.p. Luxe Blanket. The temporary store is open now through Dec. 26 next to Dollhouse Lingerie.

After a long wait for its liquor license, That Bar finally opened in downtown Danville on Thursday, Nov. 4, including dueling pianos, a full menu and bar service. Read more about That Bar in Patch's First Dueling Piano Bar This Side of the Caldecott Coming Soon.

Danville's CarlaPie, the cute boutique children's shop near McCaulou's, is now CarlaPie Baby & Kids Consignment. Owner Carla Ahern said she changed to consignment over Labor Day weekend after the owners of the Small Fry Shoppe consignment store retired and closed their doors. Although the shop now focuses primarily on children and maternity consignment clothes, it still sells a few new baby shower and party gifts.

San Ramon's new Brown Betty Bakery, which operates out of a catering kitchen in Hayward, specializes in made-to-order custom sweets like Strawberry Crush Cupcakes and Cinnamon Espresso Brownies. Owner Dawn McMahan hopes to open a storefront in San Ramon next summer. Meanwhile you can order your holiday treats online at www.brownbettybakery.com.

Looking for high-end salon products like Pureology and Caviar, nail polish and hair styling appliances? The new Escape Hair Salon on the corner of Alcosta and Montevideo in San Ramon offers a sizeable retail section at the front. The spacious salon, which replaced Salon Terrazzo, features a renovated interior that includes a separate men's salon area and, opening in January, a skin-care room.

This month Grocery Outlet takes over the spot vacated by Anderson's Appliances on Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin. The California-based grocery chain offers frugal shoppers steep discounts by selling manufacturers' excess inventory. Never been to one? Phil Lempert, food-trends editor for the "Today" show, called Grocery Outlet "a blend of the dollar store and Trader Joe's."

YogurtWalk opens Nov. 6 in the Shops at Tralee Village on Dublin Boulevard. The family-owned self-serve frozen yogurt shop offers 10 flavors at a time, rotating through a lengthy list that includes Green Apple Tart, Vanilla Latte, Devil's Food Cake and more. The Dublin Boulevard location is YogurtWalk's first location; the owners plan to open two more YogurtWalk shops in the East Bay in 2011.

Two new Asian eateries opened in Dublin recently: Pho Saigon 2 started serving its popular noodle soup, rice plates and other popular Vietnamese dishes in September in the Ulferts Shopping Center off Dublin Boulevard. The eatery has another Dublin location, Pho Saigon, on San Ramon Road. A new Taiwanese restaurant opened Sept. 22 on Regional Street next to 99 Ranch Market. Full House Chinese Restaurant serves favorites like General Tso's Chicken and Mu Shu Vegetables as well as a Taiwanese Combo Noodle Soup and Mandarin and Taiwanese Dim Sum.

Chef India on Hopyard Road in Pleasanton recently changed ownership and celebrated its grand re-opening in October. Now called Abhiruchi Indian Cuisine, the remodeled restaurant offers a new menu serving North and South Indian cuisine. Get a preview here.

Several Pleasanton florists are moving around town: The floral shop Bloomies on Main recently expanded its products and services with a short move into a much larger store, taking over Chateau Cool Stone's old spot at 915 Main. The Petal Pusher plans to open its new doors on Nov. 8, moving from a 100-square-foot spot on Main to 900-square-foot space on W. Angela. Owner Nicole Boshard says the larger storefront will allow her to expand her retail selection and give her more space for event consultation. And Mi Piaci closed its floral design studio Mi Piaci on Rheem Drive but is keeping its "virtual doors" open.

Honeybee Frozen Yogurt opened Nov. 3 on Vasco Road in the Vasco Plaza near Tequila's Taqueria in Livermore. The family-owned self-serve yogurt shop features 10 rotating flavors and 40 toppings daily, including two tarts, one dairy-free option and one sugar-free option.

The family-owned Maggio's Italian Deli & Bakery opened in late September on Livermore's First Street, serving its house-made Italian pastries to morning shoppers and popular "Grandma Fanny" and Hot Pastrami sandwiches to the lunchtime crowd. Just because it's November doesn't mean you have to put away your outdoor barbeque. The retail shop GreenLeaf BBQ, which recently moved its doors across the courtyard in Livermore's Blacksmith Square, is offering a "Bird & Fire" class on Nov. 20 to teach you how to cook your holiday turkey on the grill. Last but certainly not least: Big congrats to the Tri-Valley winners of this year's Diablo Food Awards: Danville's Esin Restaurant & Bar, San Ramon's Incontro and Livermore's  Restaurant at Wente Vineyards all made the judges' elite list of the seven top East Bay restaurants. Esin Restaurant & Bar came out on top with a total score of 96, Wente came in third place with a score of 94, and Incontro finished in the fourth spot with 93.
