Preliminary Hearing Pushed Back a Month in Child Porn Case

A judge agreed to push back to October the preliminary hearing in the case of Michael Vawter, the Danville man charged with downloading pre-teen porn onto his work laptop.

WALNUT CREEK – A 40-year-old Danville man accused of downloading child pornography videos onto his thumb drive has another month to prepare for his preliminary hearing after a judge this morning agreed to another month's delay to give attorneys time to study the evidence.

Michael Vawter, who worked as an insurance broker in San Ramon before his mid-March arrest, showed up in a Walnut Creek courtroom today for his short proceeding. He didn't speak, except before and after in conversation with his private attorney.

Both sides agreed they need more time for forensic analysis before they're ready to present the facts of the case. Judge George Spanos scheduled the hearing for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 14 at the Walnut Creek Superior Court.

Vawter remains free after posting $20,000 bail the day of his March 17 arrest. He still lives in Danville, but his membership with the Boy Scouts of America was revoked days after his arrest.

Police say they found nearly 200 videos, one of them apparently depicting a man having sex with a pre-teen girl.
