Preliminary Hearing Date Set for Ex-Cub Scout Leader Accused of Downloading Child Porn
Michael Vawter of Danville appeared in court today, where a judge ordered him to return for a preliminary hearing in August.
Michael Vawter, a 40-year-old former Cub Scout leader from Danville accused of downloading child pornography onto his laptop, was ordered back to court next month for a preliminary hearing.
At the 8:30 a.m. Aug. 19 appearance, prosecutors will lay out the facts of the case before a judge, who will decide whether there's enough evidence to take it to trial. Vawter pleaded not guilty a couple of months ago to one felony charge of possession of child pornography.
This morning's hearing was brief. Vawter showed up by himself and conferred with his private attorney.
Vawter used to work at CCI Financial in San Ramon, where he was employed as an insurance broker. He lives in Danville and has been laid off from his insurance job since his arrest in March. The Cub Scouts of America also revoked his membership.
Investigators say they found nearly 200 illicit porn videos on computers or computer hardware owned by Vawter after an anonymous caller tipped them off.
Vawter remains free after posting a $20,000 bail the day of his arrest.
