Pink's the New Red for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
If you see a firefighter in pink this month, it's not because they mixed up their red suspenders in the wash. It's for a cause.
If you see a San Ramon Valley firefighter wearing pink this month, they're showing their support in the fight against breast cancer.
Now through the end of the month, San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District firefighters and staff will don pink shirts to help raise breast-cancer awareness, in the hope that more women will detect the disease early through regular screenings.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women, according to the American Cancer Society. That means one in eight women will develop breast cancer.
"Breast cancer is a disease that has touched the lives of many in our organization," said Fire Chief Richard Price. "We are proud to join in the effort to support those who are battling the disease and to ultimately help find a cure."
In addition to the visual display of support, firefighters and staff donated more than $3,000 to The Wig Source, an East Bay organization that gives free wigs to cancer patients who lose their hair from chemotherapy.
"District personnel purchased T-shirts for themselves, family and friends," said firefighter Jonas Aguiar.
For each shirt purchased, $12 goes to The Wig Source.
The fire district serves 155 square miles of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon and the southern part of Morgan Territory and the Tassajara Valley. About 167,500 people live in the district.
