PatchTV: New Pedestrian Crossing Installed at Hartz and Prospect
Crossing at Hartz and Prospect just got easier.
Pedestrians looking to cross Hartz Avenue at the Prospect Avenue intersection can now do so with a little more safety on their side.
A new pedestrian crossing system has been installed at the busy intersection. It is triggered by motion or you can press a pedestrian crossing button.
Danville Transportation Director Tai Williams said that the Hartz and Prospect intersection is one of Danville's busier crossings so that is why it was chosen for this new system.
Once the system is triggered, lights embedded in the concrete of Hartz along the crosswalk will flash, along with a pedestrian crossing sign at the corners.
Williams said that all the lights are LEDS and added that an improvement like this costs about $50,000.

Even watching the video here the cars did not want to stop. And they did not wait Until the people were thru the crosswalk.

Since the new system has gone up, I can say that there seems to be less confusion for pedestrians. One the lights start flashing, the cars stop. Whereas before you almost always had to make eye contact with the driver to get him or her to stop so you could cross. (Personal experience speaking, of course.)

The solution:
Close Hartz Avenue between Diablo Road and School Street and make it a pedestrian mall.

That's an Interesting idea, Beau.

One morning I made a prolonged stop at this intersection while the previous lights were down. A few cars lined up behind me and one very considerate person decided I was taking too long and began to lay on their car horn. I have encountered similar reactions when stopping at crosswalks for pedestrians as well in this area.
