Memorial Arises At Accident Intersection

Candles, flowers and a warning sign now sit at the intersection where two Danville women were killed in a fatal accident eight days ago

A makeshift memorial has sprung up at the intersection where two Danville women were killed eight days ago.

Candles and flowers now sit at the northwest corner of the intersection of Brookside Drive and Sycamore Valley Road.

That corner and the southwest corner both also have large signs saying "Speed Killed Mother and Daughter Here."

Elham Pirdavari, 51, and her mother, Mahindokht Dowlati, 72, both died on Nov. 7 when their car was struck by another automobile as Pirdavari drove northbound on Brookside Drive through the intersection.

The other vehicle was driven by a 32-year-old Walnut Creek man. He was driving westbound on Sycamore Valley Road. The man was injured and taken to Eden Valley Medical Center in Castro Valley. He is expected to recover.

Police have asked that the surviving driver's identity not be released while the fatal accident is investigated.

Some Patch readers have written in, asking why the investigation into the accident is taking so long.

This evening, Danville public information coordinator Geoff Gillette posted a response on the accident's original story that said an investigation like this is a "meticulous process" that can involve accident reconstruction, toxicology reports and measurement of site lines.

He said the typical length of an investigation into a fatal accident is one month.

Patch readers have also flooded the story's comments section with concerns about the safety of Sycamore Valley Road. Many have requested the speed limit be lowered and more visible signs be installed along what many consider to be a major thoroughfare.

Readers have also posted their concerns about other dangerous intersections in town on Patch's Danville's Dangerous Crosswalks map. More than 60 problem locations are pinpointed on the map. (Click the link to see the map and add a location.)

One reader identied as "Glen" has started a blog for people to comment on the accident and the road conditions.

Gillette posted a response last Wednesday that noted Sycamore Valley Road is not a residential street. He said it's a major artery to Interstate 680 that sees 28,000 cars on an average day.

He also said lowering the speed limit is a complicated process. State law mandates speed limits be set at prevailing speeds and lowering the posted speed below that limit would subject all speeding tickets on that road to legal challenge.

He added the city has strengthened its enforcement of existing traffic laws, which has resulted in a reduction of speed on Sycamore Valley Road.

It's not working, I saw a car pulled over right at the same spot yesterday, getting a ticket by a Motorcycle Cop.

Ron,

I hope you never lose a loved one. You are a very nasty, heartless individual! Just think of this poor family that lost TWO people dear to them all at one time. Oh, excuse me, you have no heart so you could care less! What a jerk!

I drove by this intersection last night and cars were speeding by like they were ON the freeway. I realize this is a main road that connects Blackhawk to the freeway, but the speed the cars drive down this road is incredible. The speed limit is 45 but the cars were speeding past me and I was going the speed limit.
