It Was Always Cal for Former SRV QB Zach Kline

Former San Ramon Valley High School quarterback Zach Kline stays committed to Cal when other top recruits jump to other schools.

Zach Kline, former San Ramon Valley High School quarterback standout, is staying committed to Cal.

The San Francisco Chronicle featured Kline in a recent story about top-level recruits jumping ship from their original commitment. But not Kline.

Kline graduated from high school early and started taking classes at Cal on Jan. 17. He committed to Cal his junior year.

"I thought it'd be the best thing for me, learn the playbook, learn the speed of college and get those freshman moments out of the way, (like) getting lost going to class," Kline said Monday. "Being a freshman on the team, as freshmen anywhere, you go from high school being the big man on campus to the bottom of the totem pole."

Kline also had a few choice words for those who broke commitment:

"Those who want to be Bears, who bleed blue and gold, will stay with it," he said. "You don't play for one coach. You play for yourself, you play for coach Tedford and you play for the university. I think ... the guys who are committed understand that. They're true Bears. They want to be here."
